The plan for Prismata’s Event system

We’ve been doing a lot of work on sound, assets, and the campaign this week. We’re not quite ready to show that work off just yet, but see our latest dev vlog for a bit of info about our upcoming Steam Early Access launch (that vlog was even picked up by Cliqist and N4G!)

Instead, I want to discuss our plans for Prismata’s Event mode. We deployed a few changes to the mode this week, and more are coming.

The role of events in Prismata

Our goal with events in Prismata is threefold:

  • To provide novel and interesting experiences to current Prismata players via non-standard game modes
  • To provide a schedule of planned multiplayer activities to keep players coming back
  • To give less competitive players more ways to enjoy the game beyond bot play

The third point here can’t be understated. Though we aim to make Prismata a high-quality product as a competitive game, there is a substantial cohort of Prismata players that is simply not interested in a competitive ladder. We want to do more to help them have enjoyable experiences outside of bot play, and events provide a way of achieving that.

Events have the potential of expanding the audience of our game and could even be a key ingredient in Prismata’s success. We’ve seen it many times before; the multiplayer scene in StarCraft: Brood War thrived primarily because of the success of less competitive game modes (money maps, tower defense, and so on). It’s even possible that certain event modes surpass regular Prismata in popularity (anyone remember when DOTA was simply a WarCraft 3 mod?)


That’s why we’re experimenting with events during the alpha period. Prismata’s base rules form a rich foundation for a huge variety of game modes that vary greatly in scope and skill ceiling, and we think exploring that space is a high-value activity.


The long-term plan for events

Last year’s event survey taught us that players really want two different things from events:

  • short, scheduled multiplayer competitions with prizes (brawls)
  • wacky, alternative modes to be played non-competitively

We’ve been testing both of the above in Prismata’s Events page, and both have proven to be popular. Hence, our long-term plan will be to expand on both of the above, while also trying new things.

The current weekly loop of events is intended to be temporary. The current implementation is mostly an artifact of how the scheduler on our server was originally programmed (it loops once a week for delivering daily bonuses and weekly ranked play tickets to supporters and bundle holders). We’ll soon be transitioning away from that system, and events will be scheduled in a free-flowing calendar and timed so that players in all time zones will have access to all game modes. The calendar will be updated regularly and events will be posted weeks in advance of running. We may retain some weekly scheduled events like Friday mode-of-the-week or Saturday afternoon brawls, but we expect most events will run at a different time whenever they are run, and may run less or more often than once per week. There could ultimately be dozens of formats, as some of our mode-of-the-week events will be used for brawls instead (you can see an example with the new “Price War” Brawl that we’ve just launched).

And of course, we’ll continue to run special one-off events like last weekend’s Planetary Mega Brawl, which attracted a massive number of participants.

From there, things could go much further. We could add a kind of “event score” to encourage players to achieve a certain number of event points over a week or over a “season” for a reward (e.g. a special badge if you could earn 100 event points in a month, and better ones for 200/500/etc.) We could even implement something like the Race Seasons in Path of Exile where the whole Event mode is essentially turned into a giant grand prix. The possibilities are endless.


For now, we’re continuing to focus on only one new format per week (so that our development efforts remain fixed on getting to Steam Early Access), and we’ll be making only minor changes to the event functionality for the next few months. But we may redirect more efforts to event mode in the future, especially if particular events turn out to be unexpectedly popular.


This week’s events

This week, we’re running an all-new Mode of the Week that we’re dubbing “Our Competent Robotic Helpers”. This mode is a variant of an older mode called LuckClick that was developed by Will and Alex many years ago, and was an internal favourite among Lunarch developers. The premise is simple: play a normal Prismata game, but Wacky Bot takes over for you halfway through. You can play a flawless opening and have the bot screw it all up, only to witness a dazzling comeback as your opponent’s bot fails to eliminate a key unit upon breaching. In the original LuckClick mode, players had 30 seconds to make as many moves as they could before Wacky Bot would take over (with no increment or time bonus). Robotic Helpers is a bit more mellow than that; instead, Wacky Bot takes over at a random time between turns 6 and 12. You never know when it’s going to happen. Wacky Bot always takes over for both players at the same time, but player 1 and player 2 each have a 50% chance of being usurped first.

In addition to the 10-hour open Mode of the Week running on Friday afternoons/evenings, we’ve also added a 1-hour Mode of the Week Brawl at 1pm EST on Sunday. There, you’ll be able to play Robotic Helpers for prizes and a special event badge. Timers are reduced to 20 seconds per turn for Mode of the Week Brawls.

Our new Price War Brawl event now runs every Thursday and features 4 of our most popular Mode of the Week events: Random Tech Costs, Monogreen Tech, Gold Rush, and Gold Drought. All of these events alter the prices of Prismata units, leaving you to completely rethink your build orders and how you evaluate each unit. Like the Mode of the Week Brawl, this event runs for an hour, features 20-second-per-turn time controls, and awards a number of prizes.

Our Potpourri and Mode of the Week events now feature participation prizes as well. You only need to play a single game of each to be eligible. We’re aware that there’s currently no way to determine who won the prize if you were offline when it was awarded, and we’ll be looking to fix this in the future.

Here are some of the Casual Match bots, and what they do

Our new Casual Match feature is finally live!

Casual Match is the new Prismata mode, featuring unranked player vs player and bot play.


Casual Match was designed mainly for newer players, as well as the large cohort of players who frequently play Master Bot but don’t play much Ranked Play. The new mode offers more variety, as there are over 25 different unique bot personalities, some of whom are very tough! Wins in Casual Match mode earn you prizes. They also provide a bit of a boost if you’re trying to ascend through the early tiers of Ranked Play mode.


Prismata Casual Match Update

Hi all!

I just wanted to deliver a quick update on how things are coming with our next patch, which includes a massive bot overhaul, Casual Match queues, new achievements, and more. I’m incredibly excited about this update—for one thing, it adds many new bot personalities, and we’ve found in testing that these personalities present many interesting and enjoyable challenges.


Some very good news: thanks to a lot of ground work put in by our AI developer Dave, we’ve been able to extend the scope of these personalities far beyond what we thought was originally possible. We’ve added hundreds of custom bot openings of various types (aggressive, economic, and so on) and created dozens of new bot personalities.

Small Addendum to the Account Reset

Just a quick note on a small change we made today…

Last week, we did our final Reward Reset. Things went smoothly, but we received a few reports from players who received fewer Shards and Omnipower Cores than expected. It turned out that we had forgotten to include level-up rewards for some players when recalculating their inventory contents after the reset.

This has now been corrected, so a few Prismata players might see a few extra shards or Power Cores show up in their inventories when they next log in.

I’m currently adding the final touches to our Casual Match mode and new bot update, so look forward to that later this week!


Final Prismata Reward Reset before Beta

Hi all,

An important announcement: we’ll be doing our final Reward Reset before Beta later this week. Here’s everything you need to know:

  • The Prismata server will shut down at approximately 4pm ET tomorrow (Thursday, January 26) for 30-60 minutes.
  • Players will lose all skins/emotes/infusions they have collected so far (but will keep those unlocked as real-money purchases, prizes, or using Kickstarter/Paypal reward codes).
  • Players’ current Armory and Black Lab status will be wiped.
  • Players will receive a rebate of Power Cores, Omnipower Cores, Black Cards, Infusions, and Shards commensurate with how many have been earned so far.

This reset will be similar to the previous one.


Introducing the Prismata Fair Play Policy

Prismata is quickly approaching its public Steam Beta, and we’ll soon be expecting a large amount of growth in the size of our community. Accordingly, we feel that it’s time to introduce some official policies and procedures to help manage our community and maintain the integrity of our competitive ladder and events. These policies revise and supplement our previous sportsmanship guidelines.


Prismata Beta Pre-Season Tourney 2 is this Sunday, and it’s the RAPID ROUND!

Hi everyone!

I’m thrilled to announce that I’ll be hosting another 1-day just-for-fun Prismata Beta Pre-Season Tourney this Sunday!

This week’s tourney is the Rapid Round. All games will use Rapid (20s) time controls. Rules are otherwise similar to the previous Pre-Season Tourney from December.

As always, players of all skill levels are welcome. There are prizes just for participating, and the tourney is Swiss-style so players will be matched against opponents with similar tournament records.

Happy New Year! Quick Prismata Update…

Hi all!

Most of the Lunarch team is still on holiday vacation, myself included, so apologies for the lack of updates and news (I know about that music bug; we’ll fix it first thing next Monday when we’re back in the office!)

For now, I’m going to leave you with a few quick updates and our plans for the next month or so.


Prismata Beta Pre-Season Tourney Announcement

It’s time for us to start thinking about tourneys! As a lead-up to next year’s Prismata Beta Grand Prix and World Championship, we’ll be running a series of 1-day just-for-fun tournaments that we’re calling the Prismata Beta Pre-Season.

These Pre-Season tournaments will run every couple of weeks before the Prismata Beta Grand Prix launches next year. The exact rules will vary from tourney to tourney, but our goal is to create an enjoyable competitive experience for Prismata players of all skill levels. There will be prizes just for participating!

The first Prismata Beta Pre-Season Tournament runs this Sunday. Details and sign-up below!
